Mature Students
Mature Students Receive Education Awards
Adults in the South Dublin area are engaging in education and Life Long Learning. A significant number have studied courses leading to FETAC accreditation from levels 3 to 5. The courses are delivered through the Community Education Service and the Back to Education Initiative (BTEI).
It can be a big decision to embark on a course for an adult with many commitments in the home, work and social life. It requires dedication to follow a course of study and achieve FETAC awards. The South Dublin Adult Education Service congratulates all those who have worked so hard to enhance their qualifications. The group of women who completed a two-year course of part time study to achieve full FETAC Level 5 Childcare qualifications deserve particular praise for this long-term commitment to their studies.
Doctor Ted Fleming, Director of Centre for Research in Adult Learning & Education at Maynooth College presented the awards. Deirdre Keyes, Education Officer, represented the executive of County Dublin VEC at the event. Deirdre is very involved with the development of FETAC at County Dublin and nationally. Patricia Doran Adult Education Officer, acknowledged the dedication of the tutors and Eileen Uhlemann in particular, who has been the cornerstone of developing these programmes.
Eileen Uhlemann, Community Education Facilitator, works directly with the representatives of communities throughout Rathdown to deliver programmes of education in local settings. The Family and Community Resources Centres, the Home School Liaison Service and FAS Community Employment Supervisors are vital links in identifying the kind of programmes their areas require. The community education service works collaboratively with other local agencies to enable adults with disabilities to engage in adult education. Tuition hours are provided free of charge to the local communities and to all eligible BTEI students.
The adult education service has delivered BTEI courses leading to FETAC Level 5 awards in Childcare, Special Needs Assistant. Other courses have included I.T. Skills, Reception Skills, Office Procedures, Education for Life and Horticulture.
The South Dublin Adult service is particularly grateful to Cathy Purcell and Emer O Reilly at Airfield, Kilmacud for facilitating the practical section of the horticulture course. When it was no longer possible at the Goatstown allotments.
The South Dublin Adult Education Service is currently recruiting for courses in Childcare and Horticulture in Dundrum and a Special Needs Assistant course in Shankill. These courses will commence in the Autumn.
