Showcasing The Writers
Showcasing the Writers
An Adult Education Event.
Many of you may not know that over the SPAR shop in Main Street Dundrum is a hub for the organisation of adult learning. South Dublin Adult Education Centre (SDALC) organises courses for adults in this modest building in a wide variety of locations throughout the area including Dundrum Town Centre. This academic year the students have produced their fourth annual publication of writings entitled “All About Us” and a collaborative story entitled “The Lighthouse”. This is a rich body of work, which includes fact and fiction, stories and poems. The publications were launched at the Adult Education Centre at Dudnrum Town Centre.
Speaking in advance of the event, Mary Mc Grath, (Adult Literacy Organiser) said, that working on this project is one of the highlights of her role in Adult Education.
Deirdre Keyes, Education Officer at Co. Dublin presented the awards to students. In her keynote address she praised the Adult Basic Education Service and emphasised the role accreditation and FETAC awards can play as a passport to life opportunities.
In addition to the launch of the writings, many students received FETAC awards from the studies they had undertaken during the year. Last year some brave women took on the Leaving Certificate English. This year the Junior Certificate English and Maths were the courageous choice for others.
During the launch of the publication and presentation of awards, Patricia Doran (Adult Education Officer for South Dublin AES), stated that the students’ writings,
“…illustrate the kind of experience that ordinary people have but you just know even in the hard times, there is the strength to get through to the other side of trouble”
South Dublin Adult Education Centre is particularly interested in hearing from adults who would like to improve their reading, writing and maths skills.
